Liposuction on the rise as many women avoid physical activity and dieting

The demand for cosmetic surgery is increasing, with a worsening obesity epidemic feeding a desire to weight loss quick fix.

According to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ABAP), the use of liposuction in the United Kingdom increased by 90 percent in 2006. The number of cosmetic surgery in general rose 31 percent to almost 29,000.

The Harley Medical Group disputes these figures and says that the total number of operations is actually more than 90,000.

Liposuction is a cosmetic surgical procedure in which fat is sucked out certain body parts like thighs or abdomen. "This is not desperately difficult," said Douglas McGeorge, president of ABAP. "I could teach a four-year period to do so. The capacity is re-sculpting the body."

McGeorge attributes the growing popularity of liposuction to greater public acceptance of the procedure. "People do not feel too bad to have cosmetic surgery as it did. Techniques are studied and the result is predictable."

No medical procedure, however, has no risk. According to a 2004 study published in Dermatologic Surgery, complications occur in about 7 per 1,000 liposuction operations. Twenty percent of them were classified as large.

McGeorge noted that liposuction is not a cure for obesity. "This is not an alternative to a plan," he said. "It works best on someone who is happy with the stomach for example, but his legs ... may be new. If someone is three stone (40 pounds) overweight and wants liposuction to solve the problem, I say leave. "

"Liposuction is not a solution to excess fat," said Mike Adams, co-author of "natural appetite suppressant for weight loss safely and effectively."

"If the fat is eliminated in some parts of the body will only accumulated in other areas. The essential thing is not a surgical removal of fat, but rather to adopt healthy lifestyles that burn body fat and metabolic equilibrium body" said Adams.

The annual market for plastic surgery in the United States is estimated at 15 million dollars.
